The Running Shoe Myth

Up until a few days ago I never thought of this blog as a forum to discuss my running life. That is, until reading the book BORN TO RUN A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen. One of the things that struck me was realizing I had been tricked into buying very expensive running shoes faithfully to protect myself from injury. Meanwhile what I was really doing was keeping the big shoe companies in business while I was getting nothing much for my dollar except for a funky looking pair of shoes. There was a peer reviewed study done that showed the highest rate of injury among marathoners was directly related to the most expensive running shoe being used . Inexpensive or old shoes had less cushioning and therefore were better for your foot. This is contrary to what most of us have been taught so it sounds absurd...until you do a little research. I am trying this experiment out for myself. I get a lot of injury anyway so it can't hurt. from what I read it'll make things so much better. Can't wait to find out. Can't wait to save money doing it.

  1. Well, just as you became Gail, Midella Dapac revives...
I do not know at which olympics, Kenyan runners ran the marathon without shoes and won 1st, 2nd and 4th!
    Bye!

  4. Hello!
I did checked and I was partially wrong...In 1960, Abebe Bikila ran barefoot and won the Rome Olympic marathon in 2h15min16sec. He ran faster barefoot, according to his coach.
    Good night!
