Look who's Going to Run our City's Sewer & Water Plant for the Next 30 Years

A little bit of a rant...

Today our elected City Counsellors voted in favour (9-4) to sign a sewer and water contract with a company whose contract none of them have read. It sounds crazy, but I was one of those people in the packed gallery when the counsellors were asked to raise their hands if they read the contract. Not even the Mayor raised his hand. As someone said eloquently in the House of Commons today, we did not seek out Veolia, so much as they sought us out because we are not concerned with knowing the fine print ( like how much it will cost the City , I mean us, if we opt out of the 30 year contract, who will be responsible if they go over budget, ...) of what it is we are about to sign. Indeed, we are the ideal client for an international company with a questionable background. A deal where no questions are asked! This is so reckless I can't even believe it.

If you are interested in this topic, go to Winnipeg Free Press, "Council Approves Veolia Sewage Deal", written by Mary Agnes Welch and post a comment. Let it be known what your thoughts are. After all, it is your tax dollars that are going to pay for it for the next 30 years.

A Closer Look: Veolia
